The Law

“For the Law, since it has only a shadow of the good things to come and not the very form of things can never by the same sacrifices which they offer continually year by year make perfect those who draw near.” Hebrews 10:1

Nothing like the Law to show you how to live. By all means it is a good thing but this verse just reflects how flawed our thinking can be in regards to the law. Yesterday I was able to attend a church that talked about the Law. The pastor there taught on how the law was great but was not ever meant to take the place of faith. Most of the laws that are in place was to make sure there was civil order. Here the writer of Hebrews makes the same case. The Law cannot save you. In fact He later goes on to express, “Do you think the blood of a bull can save you?” It obviously can’t. The only thing that can save us is Jesus. We have to put our faith in Jesus.

Now for me this is a freeing concept. In fact, nothing can save us unless we have our faith in Jesus. Yesterday I got it when the pastor said, “The law is a reflection of how much we need a savior.” So true. Often, I get caught up in the things that I can do for God, like be holy, or not think of bad things, or not do bad things at all. But what the correct application for my life is not so much not to do them, but to do them because I am ever so grateful that Jesus saved us from the punishment of my sins. God’s standard is to be perfect. I am not. But because of Jesus, i am able to have the benifits of salvation and the gift of being a child of God. There is nothing more you can ask for. So, the correct response is to follow the law not because you have to, but because you want to.

Lord thank you for this reminder. Thank you for your sacrifice.
