Drifting: To easy to do do.

“We must pay more careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away.” Hebrews 2:1

I like how the writer of Hebrews makes it totally certain here. We must pay more careful attention. Note the word “more”. He asks the readers to be very intentional to what is going on. To be very precise, to be very aware. But just not somewhat aware. You must be “more” aware. I guess that is why he states you can just “drift away.” The image that comes to my mind is like surfing. Sometimes you are waiting in the water for the set to come and what happens is that if you are not careful you can drift out of the surf spot. Not because you want to, but because the current is strong and it just takes you someplace. You just drift. You got to be make a conscious effort to stay in the same spot. Just like you need to make a conscious effort to stay with God.

I like these choices of words. To me it means that I have to be more aware of my surroundings, who I am with, and what things I do. I need to be very aware of how I can drift or how easily it is for me to drift away from God. I need to always have my eyes open to see where I am, and make sure I am not drifting away from God. The thing about drifting is that you can do it so easily. It’s just a matter of time before you know that you are off course but at the same time you do not realize it. It takes being super aware of what is around you to know to make sure you are in the the right spot.

Lord thank you for the warning of drifting. Help me to be more aware that I need to make sure I am in the right spot.
