Constant Communication


Once again David inquired of the Lord, and the Lord answered him, “Go down to Keilah, for I am going to give the Philistines into you hand.” -1 Samuel 23:4

This seems to be a very common phrase I am reading in this book of Samuel, “David inquired of the Lord”. David was in constant communication with God. He asked God about every major thing in his life. He developed a habit and lifestyle that before any major decision he ask God before anything. It prevented him from making brainless decisions but it also give him a dependence on God. It is a very wise choice to make. Jesus in the sermon on the mount also said to, “ask... seek... knock....” He instructed to ask God for wisdom in all that you do.

To me this is elementary in teaching, but really difficult to put into practice, especially here in the US. I am convinced that “rugged individualism” and “self made man” theories in life has really hindered our ability to be more reliant on God. Thus it is difficult for me to ask God for everything. But what I must learn is that I need to be in consistent communication with God. To be connected as Jesus said, “vine to the branches.” Developing a lifestyle like David, where I learn to ask God for everything, will bring me closer to God, and that is what I really want.

Lord, today I am gonna make a habit of asking you for everything, help me develop a lifestyle where I constantly have You on my mind.

When God ask you to do something crazy...

When the Lord first spoke through Hosea, the Lord said to Hosea, “Go, take to yourself a wife of whoredom and have children of whoredom, for the land commits great whoredom by forsaking the Lord.” So he went and took Gomer, the daughter of Dibaim, and she conceived and bore him a son. -Hosea 1:2-3 Now this is kind of a crazy assignment. It’s not like he says go and build a church, or go preach to the people, or fast for the nation. No, God told him to go take a WHORE for a wife. It doesn’t even sound Biblical. But that is what you see, God giving a very different task. Hosea’s first assignment, marry a whore. God asked Hosea to do something crazy. But what you see here is that Hosea, he DOES IT!. Without question, he just does it, he is very obedient to God. Though it’s sort of a strange situation, I am encouraged by Hosea’s obedience. Now, I don’t know about you, if one of the first big assignments God gives me is to go out and marry a whore, not sure how I would take that.

Fulfill your vows

“Sacrifice thank offerings to God, fulfill your vows to the Most High.” Psalms 50:14 When you make promises to God, you must fulfill them. This verse sums up my devotion today. It seems that there is a theme. If you look at it Judges 11 Jephthah made a request that if he won a victory, he would sacrifice whatever came out of his front door first. I wonder what he was thinking. But he made the boldest move and made that. I bet he was hoping that a servant, or maybe one of his wives, or if he was lucky a goat. But what who comes out? His one and only daughter. That sucks. I mean come on, you can’t wonder but why in the world would God do something like that. But that is God, he ask nothing but the best of us, even if it hurts. Not because he doesn’t love us, but because he know and where our heart might drift off too. If the sacrifice isn’t worth it, then it’s not a sacrifice. And though it pained Jepththat, he did it.
